Feeding Your Bearded Dragon

By nature bearded dragons are omnivores, and will love to eat variety of food. The bulk of a dragon diet will be made of vegetables, fruit(non-citrus) and insects. You will have to provide a balanced diet for your pet, and that includes a mix of these three food types. Insects will have to be small so dragons can eat them. If you keep dragons as pets, read about what can bearded dragons eat.

What is a Baby Bearded Dragon Diet

If you have a baby bearded dragon it will require different diet needs than an adult. Young beardies are growing and need more protein, so more insect rich diet is needed. Usually Live Crickets (acheta domesticus) are feed to bearded dragons, as they are easy to find. A normal young dragon will eat more then 20-30 crickets a day. It is best to leave fresh vegetables always in the tank, and to give insects from 2-3 times a day while the dragon is young. If the dragon leaves some insects uneaten remove them from the tank.

What is an Adult Bearded Dragon Diet

Adult dragons do not need so much protein and require small amounts of insects each day. Its I best to provide insects just once a day, what ever he can eat in 10 min, and remove the rest from the enclosure. Adult dragon metabolism is slower so if you provide the same amount as for young dragons they will become fat. Vegetables can be offered all the time inside the tank.

Insects cost money, so you dont want them to escape inside your home. There is nothing more weird then waking up in a room full of bugs on your pillow. So you must do some precautions to prevent this.

The best options are plastic containers you can buy in pet stores that are made for this especially for this. If you want you can use plastic bins that you dill some holes in them. Just don’t use nets as some insects can chew true them.

Crickets, Roaches, & Locusts
If you're keeping a large number of insects it is best to use one larger container, and to get a smaller one for transport while feeding. Keep them in a quiet place away from people.  Live Crickets (acheta domesticus) are easiest to keep.

Worms & Larvae

They will do well in strong plastic containers, worms and larvae like to chew, so make sure containers are from thicker plastic. Provide air holes but not to big for them to escape.

Best place to Store Insects:

I recommend you to talk to your store owner how to take care of your insects. But there are some rules you can follow when keeping insects.

Find out the temperature you have to provide for your insects from you store keeper, so they are healthy and stay alive. Crickets will make noise and smell bad, so store them in a place where you will not hear them. It is best to find a dry and safe place, where temperature will not fluctuate to much.

If you want your insects to stay healthy you must provide them with a proper food and water. There are High Calcium Cricket Feed food you can find in pet stores that are great for this, and will keep your insect happy. It is recommended to follow the instructions on the food label.
